Call for Participation [Special Session] :
Paper Session on Living Labs
We are looking for participants for a session which we are organizing as part of the conference "Transforming consumption-production systems towards just and sustainable futures" hosted by the Sustainable Consumption Research and Action Initiative (SCORAI), the European Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption and Production (ERSCP) and Wageningen University & Research (WUR), July 5-8, 2023 in Wageningen, The Netherlands.
Session title: Reflecting on the structuration of transformation; addressing impacts, replicability and scalability of Living Labs
- Proposed Session: Academic session of 90 minutes
- Chairs: Julia Backhaus, RWTH Aachen University, Marlyne Sahakian and Julien Forbat, University of Geneva
- Session Type: Paper Presentations
Abstract
Research has ventured out of the lab and into society. Various types of Living Labs have emerged in recent years to experiment with and advance more sustainable forms of production and consumption. While using a variety of labels and following different approaches, characteristic commonalities of Living Labs include a transdisciplinary approach to research and knowledge creation; an iterative, experimental design committed to learning and reflexivity; a long-term orientation towards societal transformation and an accompanying interest in transferability or scalability; and a focus on a real-life environments. Beyond the political and academic commitment to contribute to sustainable development in and through Living Labs, there is a need to ascertain how and in what way fragmented experiences and experiments may be contributing to systemic changes.
To address this question, this session on Living Labs invites submissions on topics such as, but not limited to:
- The quantification or qualification of sustainability impacts of Living Lab-based research
- Conditions and considerations for the replicability or scalability of Living Labs
- The systemic effects of Living Labs and ways to enhance them
- Living Labs combining production and consumption dynamics
- Questions of power and justice and how to address them in and through Living Lab-based research
Please hand in your abstract of 300-500 words via the online submission portal by January 15, and send a copy to Julia Backhaus (julia.backhaus[at]humtec.rwth-aachen.de) and Marlyne Sahakian (Marlyne.Sahakian[at]unige.ch). Abstracts should follow the conference guidelines as outlined on the conference website.
